Over the past weeks and months, I’ve been testing out and using the Otterbox Defender case for the new iPad, or iPad 3. When you’re paying $$$ for gadgets such as the iPad, you’re going to want to be keeping it safe, secure and protected. A while back, we had a poll here on TechInform asking what you preferred in a case – ultimate protection, style, or a mix between the two. I’m pleased to say that this case not only offers the ultimate protection, but does looks pretty kick-ass too!
The case is made up of four parts. There is the two part case which clips together, keeping your iPad incredibly secure. This case features cutouts for all your buttons present on the iPad, the camera and the Apple logo which is a nice touch. What’s also nice about this case is that it has a screen protector built in! It’s no good having the “ultimate protective case”, if your screen is still vulnerable to the elements. Then, over the top of the two parts case, we have a thick, absorbent rubber which is what is going to absorb the shock from any bumps and tumbles your iPad takes. Then finally, we have the front cover which clips on nicely to protect the front of your iPad when you’re not using it.
So how does this case perform? Firstly, let’s take into consideration what you’re going to be using this case for. This isn’t your average case, and if you’re the average consumer, I don’t think this is the case for you. This case is tailored for two kinds of people, in my opinion. Those of us who are traveling around a lot and need to have our iPad with us can depend on this case to protect our iPad from any accidental drops. Secondly, those who work in particularly dangerous environments, for example, a building site, but still require use of the iPad. This case is going to protect you from any drops on the site and from any unsuspecting pieces of rubble.
I performed from drop tests with my iPad in the case which you can see in my video review below. I did two drop tests, one where I threw the iPad with Defender down a flight of stairs, and throwing it onto concrete. You’re probably thinking that I’m mad.. Oh what I do for you guys Well I’m pleased (and relieved) to say that the iPad was not harmed in the slightest. This case ‘defended’ my iPad absolutely phenomenally, and I can’t fault it whatsoever in terms of protection.
One down side is that it can be a little difficult to unclip the two part case, but if you’re in the environment that I discussed previously, you’re not really going to be needing to take the case off, therefore, this isn’t much of an issue.
