Today, I’m bringing you the news that Microsoft have acquired Skype, the online video conferencing giant, for a whopping $8.5 million dollars!
In Tony Bate, Skype CEO’s own words:
“I’m excited to announce that Skype and Microsoft have entered into a definitive agreement whereby Microsoft will acquire Skype for $8.5 billion US. Once the acquisition closes, Skype will become a new business division of Microsoft. Colt4595, TIRanald and I have been discussing the future of Skype over Twitter. We all agree that this acquisition has all but killed Skype. I’ve been using Skype for years. I don’t just use it for keeping in touch with Internet friends, but for keeping in touch with family, so, if Skype does “die”, it would be a big blow! This brings me on to the subject of FaceTime. If Skype does fold, there’s going to be nothing stopping FaceTime… on the Mac/iOS side of things. Quite honestly, if Apple released FaceTime for Android, and for PC, they would be unstoppable. For FaceTime to completely take the limelight, it needs to be equipped with a Chat function, present in Skype, and a Conference call function, also available in Skype.
