Today, Google introduced Google Drive, which is a cloud based storage service that can be accessed from any Mac, PC, Android, or iOS device. The service is very much like other cloud services such as Dropbox and Microsoft’s SkyDrive. The service allows you to upload up to 5 GB worth of files for free, but allows up to 16 TB of storage to be bought.
One thing that’s really neat and different is the fact that Google Drive allows you to open up to 30 different file types right inside the client, without the need for a native application. This can prove very handy if you need to open up a type of document and you don’t have an application that supports it. The service also includes many sharing features, so you shouldn’t have any issues sending files to your friends, family, or business partners.
Although prices for the higher end amounts of storage have yet to be announced, if you choose to upgrade from 5 GB to 25 GB you will only be paying $2.50 a month, which in the scheme of things is next to nothing. To put this deal into perspective, if you were to buy the same amount of storage with Dropbox you would be looking at paying around $5.00 a month.
We’ll have to see where Google takes it’s Drive service in the future but looking at it today, I can say I believe it has a bright future ahead of it. What do you think? Leave a comment down below with your thoughts!
